An older PC often feels slow because large applications are doing work you do not need. Replacing one heavy program with a focused utility can help, but ‘lightweight’ is not a guarantee that every feature will be fast on every machine. This guide uses the developers’ current official documentation; it is not based on an undocumented performance test.

Everything is a Windows filename search engine. Voidtools describes a small installation file, quick indexing and searching, minimal resource use and a small on-disk database. It is especially useful when the slow part of your day is waiting for File Explorer to locate a file by name.
The tool is deliberately narrow: it searches names and paths very well, but it is not a replacement for understanding folder organisation or for every content-search requirement. Its official documentation explains different indexing methods; confirm the setup for non-NTFS, removable or network locations before assuming all drives behave the same way.
What it does: builds a filename and folder-name index so searches appear quickly.
Best use case: a PC with many files where Windows search is the daily bottleneck.
Supported Windows: voidtools provides current x86, x64, ARM and ARM64 builds but does not publish a simple supported-version list on the selected download page; confirm the current build on the target Windows release.
Main advantage: narrow purpose, small download and low documented resource use.
Main limitation: fastest NTFS indexing does not mean full-text document search, and other volume types may require folder indexing.

SumatraPDF is a free Windows reader for PDF, EPUB, MOBI, CHM, XPS, DjVu, CBZ and CBR files. The official documentation describes it as small, fast and customisable. It is a strong fit when you mainly open, search, navigate and print documents and do not need a large editing suite running in the background.
Choose another tool when your normal work requires complex form editing, document redaction workflows, collaborative review or production PDF authoring. Recent documentation also covers newer features and pre-release tools; older-PC users should prefer the current stable release unless a specific pre-release capability is essential.
What it does: opens PDFs, ebooks, comics, XPS, DjVu and several image or text formats for reading.
Best use case: quickly opening and searching ordinary documents without launching a full editing suite.
Supported Windows: the official download page lists Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; it directs XP or Vista users to the older 3.1.2 release.
Main advantage: focused reader with installer and portable options.
Main limitation: it is not designed as a complete PDF authoring, collaborative review or professional redaction system.

7-Zip is a file archiver with support for 7z, ZIP, TAR, GZIP and many extraction formats. Its official site states that it is free and open source, can be used in commercial organisations, and offers Windows downloads for x64, x86 and ARM64. The installer is small, which makes it a practical replacement for a heavier archive manager.
Archive compatibility still matters. Use ZIP when the recipient may not have 7-Zip; use 7z when compression or encryption features matter and every recipient can open the format. Encryption does not help if a password is sent in the same message as the archive.
What it does: creates and extracts archives, including 7z, ZIP, TAR and GZIP, and extracts many additional formats.
Best use case: opening downloads, packaging groups of files and replacing an expired commercial archive utility.
Supported Windows: the official site currently lists Windows 11, 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP and older desktop/server releases, with x64, x86 and ARM64 downloads.
Main advantage: small official installers, broad format support and no registration or subscription.
Main limitation: maximum compression can be CPU- and memory-intensive, and the file manager is less guided than consumer-oriented alternatives.

Setup note: choose the build matching Windows architecture. Use normal compression for routine archives on an older CPU; ultra settings can consume much more time for a modest size reduction.
ShareX is a free, open-source Windows tool for screen capture, recording, annotation, file sharing and configurable after-capture tasks. It can save a capture locally, copy it to the clipboard, annotate it or send it through an upload workflow. That flexibility is useful for documentation and support work.
For a low-spec PC, start with local capture and only the actions you need. Automatic uploads are optional and should stay disabled until you understand the destination and privacy implications. A lightweight application can still perform expensive work when recording video, applying effects or running several after-capture actions.
What it does: captures screens or regions, annotates images, records screens and can run configurable after-capture or upload actions.
Best use case: support screenshots, documentation and repeated capture-to-save workflows.
Supported Windows: the current project no longer supports Windows 7, as confirmed by a ShareX maintainer after the move from .NET Framework. The main product page does not publish a complete version matrix, so verify the current release on the target Windows 10 or 11 system.
Main advantage: capture, annotation and workflow actions in one open-source tool.
Main limitation: screen recording, OCR, effects and uploads make it more complex and potentially heavier than the built-in Snipping Tool.

Setup note: disable automatic uploads, choose a local screenshot folder and configure one hotkey. Add other actions only after that basic path is reliable.
Download from the project’s official site rather than a software mirror or bundled installer.
Create a restore point or confirm that important files are backed up before changing default applications.
Install one utility at a time and disable automatic startup unless the feature genuinely needs it.
Test the exact task that felt slow, then compare Task Manager memory, CPU activity and responsiveness.
Keep the utility only when it saves time without adding unwanted background processes or confusing file associations.

If the PC has 4 GB of RAM, add only one utility at a time and restart before comparing. On an 8 GB system, these focused tools can coexist, but browser tabs and cloud-sync clients may still dominate memory. On a mechanical hard drive, leave free space for Windows and avoid indexing or compressing a very large folder while doing other work.
Everything: select the correct stable architecture, allow the initial index, then pin one shortcut and learn name, path and extension filters.
SumatraPDF: open a representative PDF with the portable version, test search and printing, then decide whether to install or change the default reader.
7-Zip: install the matching architecture, open one known archive and create a small ZIP. Keep the original files until extraction is verified.
ShareX: set a local save folder, configure one region-capture hotkey, disable upload actions and confirm that a capture can be found without opening ShareX history.
Download only from the official project pages recorded with this revision. A mirror can wrap a legitimate utility in an unrelated installer. Keep applications updated, but do not use an unsupported operating system as a permanent online workstation merely because a utility still launches. Review startup entries after installation, and remove old versions when the official installer does not do so automatically.
Screenshots and archives deserve special care. A screenshot may reveal account names, browser tabs or notifications; an archive may preserve deleted-looking metadata or confidential filenames. Save locally by default, inspect before sharing and use an approved transfer method for private material.
Install Everything first if finding files is the main delay.
Install SumatraPDF first if opening ordinary documents launches a large suite.
Install 7-Zip first if archives are common or an old trial utility is still installed.
Install ShareX first if screenshots, annotations and repeatable capture steps are part of your work.
Software changes cannot compensate for a failing hard drive, insufficient storage, malware, overheating or an unsupported operating system. Ollama-style advice about closing tabs does not belong here: diagnose the PC itself. Check disk health, available storage and Windows support status before treating utilities as a complete performance fix. If the machine cannot receive security updates, keeping it online for sensitive work is a larger risk than application speed.
Decision: Choose one focused utility for the bottleneck you can name. Everything, SumatraPDF and 7-Zip are the clearest low-overhead starting points; ShareX is worthwhile when its capture workflow replaces several manual steps.
Avoid installing a ‘lightweight software pack’. Each extra startup item and file association adds complexity. Use official downloads, add one application, measure whether the real task improves, and remove it if the benefit is unclear.
